Engine Der Zukunft CryEngine 3 kommt 2012 – Für den PC, die Playstation 4 und die Xbox 720
Die Frankfurter Spieleschmiede Crytek hat Ende März die Entwicklung der CryEngine 3 angekündigt. So soll bereits im nächsten Jahr mit den Programmierarbeiten der CryEngine 3 begonnen werden – diese soll schließlich 2012 parallel für den PC, die kürzlich angekündigte Playstation 4 und einer sich möglicherweise bereits in Entwicklung befindlichen Xbox 720 erscheinen. Ein genaues Release-Datum kann derzeit allerdings noch nicht genannt werden, da Crytek noch auf konkrete Informationen zum Launch der neuen Playstation 4 wartet. Crysis 2 wird also mit Sicherheit noch auf Basis der CryEngine 2 entwickelt werden – wohingegen Crysis 3 dann im Glanz der neuen Engine erstrahlen könnte.
Dennoch veröffentlichte Crytek ein erstes Demo-Video, welches zeigt, was die CryEngine 3 mit der vorhandenen Hardware der beiden jetzigen Konsolen Playstation 3 und Xbox 360 bereits darstellen können wird. Da die Leistung aktueller Rechner und der nächsten Konsolengeneration allerdings viel höher liegen, wird sich auch die CryEngine 3 nach Cryteks Angaben noch exorbitant weiterentwickeln.
