Unleashing the Big Fucking Gun 9000: how the ultimate DOOM weapon works
The Big Fucking Gun 9000 or BFG 9000 is one of the most popular shooter weapons of all time. It’s the mother of all splatter guns from DOOM, the forefather of all first-person shooters, developed by id Software under the direction of John Romero and released in 1993. The game itself made computer gaming history, as did its gameplay, mechanics, and weapons. Aside from the deeply satisfying handling of the shotgun, which is fondly remembered by gamers young and old, the BFG 9000 left a lasting impression. It was so influential that it even has its own Wikipedia article in several languages (check it out!).
With the reboot of the DOOM series in 2016, the BFG 9000 was given a complete overhaul and now looks more powerful and devastating than ever. In 2020‘s DOOM Eternal, we even got our hands on its successor Big Fucking Gun 10000 with which we blow a respectable hole in the surface of Mars (shown in the hero image above). The BFG is powerful, god-like, and legendary! But the origin of the legend was planted 30 years ago already – that’s why YouTuber decino explores with a five-minute short video how the BFG 9000 was implemented on the code side, and what strategic tricks were and are possible with it thanks to exploiting bugs and glitches. Five minutes, but entertaining, and insanely nerdy. All hail BFG 9000!
